The fourth annual Patriot Golf Day will be observed Labor Day weekend, September 3-6, with more than 4,000 golf courses around the country participating. Labor Day weekend is the busiest golf time of the year, and golfers will be asked to donate a minimum of $1 to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, a nonprofit charitable organization that provides college scholarships for children and spouses of military service members killed or disabled while serving their country.

Mississippi’s northwest corner—the Delta Region—offers an abundance of activities, from golf and gambling to music and museums. One of the Magnolia State’s fun towns is Tunica. With a population of 10,000, Tunica is dubbed the “South’s Casino Capital” for a good reason. It is the largest gaming destination between Las Vegas and Atlantic City, and is strategically located just 30 minutes south of Memphis, Tennessee.

When your golf handicap is a modest 24, the thought of breaking par is wishful thinking at best, or at least it should be. For John Richardson, not only was breaking par a personal goal he set for himself, this weekend hacker also vowed to achieve that feat in a year’s time, despite his 24 handicap. Famed Scottish golfer and commentator Sam Torrance told John Richardson to “dream on,” when Richardson told him he was determined to break par in a year. Thus, the inspiration for the title of Richardson’s book: Dream On: One Hack Golfer’s Challenge to Break Par in a Year.

Visitors to Walla Walla in southeast Washington have more than sweet onions and great wine to experience with the addition of a fabulous new golf course: Wine Valley Golf Club. Just seven miles west of town, it is arguably the premier golf course to open in the state in 2009. The links-style course officially opened last spring, much to the appreciation of locals and visitors alike. “This is truly one of the finest golf courses I’ve played,” said an impressed Ron Anderson, general manager of the Marcus Whitman Hotel and Conference Center, the city’s landmark hotel.

For golfers waiting to get their game on during these cold winter months, visiting a local golf show is one way of preparing for the season. A host of golf shows around the country, and the world for that matter, are scheduled over the next few months. This year, golf shows can be found globally in Moscow, Beijing, Seoul, Manila, London, Prague and Toronto. But the ever-popular Vancouver Golf & Travel Show in British Columbia won’t be held this year. Because of the Winter Olympics scheduled for Feb. 12-28, the show has been postponed until next year, specifically Feb. 19-20, 2011.
