Going on a long road trip is fun and exciting. Seeing the country and meeting new people is part of the RV lifestyle. Unfortunately, back pain is also a common complaint, especially if you spend long hours in the driver’s seat. Luckily, there are ways to avoid having lower back pain when you are on the road.
Take a Break
One of the great features of traveling in a motorhome is that you don’t have to stop every time someone in the family needs a restroom break. Pushing yourself to the limit, however, can result in excessive pressure on your back and serious pain. Even though your vehicle has all the comforts of home, it’s still important to stop and rest occasionally. Pull off at convenient rest stations and go for a short walk. You will arrive at your destination feeling healthier and able to actually enjoy yourself.
Trade Seats
Let your spouse take a turn behind the driver’s wheel for a little while. Take advantage of the break from driving to rest your back and your eyes. Even if you only turn over the reins for a few hours, it can make a big difference in how your back feels when you arrive at your destination.

e Packs
A fully stocked kitchen will include a few soft, comfortable ice packs. Ideal for reducing inflammation in the lower back, you should plan on using one from time to time. Rest your back against one while your partner is driving. Settle one behind you when you’re in the driver’s seat to reduce inflammation and avoid pain.
Proper Seating Position
The first step when you get behind the driver’s wheel is to make the necessary adjustments to the seat. The steering column pulls down and many seats now are adjustable. Before putting the RV or truck in drive, check to be sure that you can comfortably reach the steering wheel without hunching forward.
Avoiding back pain while driving also involves avoiding any unnecessary twisting or bending. Check your mirrors to be sure you can see properly. Consider purchasing back supports that will provide you with the extra lumbar support you need.
Back pain doesn’t have to sap the joy from your next RV adventure. Take care of yourself on the road so you will have the energy to have fun when you arrive at your destination. Take a break once in a while, let someone else take a turn driving and make sure the seat is properly positioned to protect your back and avoid pain.
