Breast cancer risk is not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you are enjoying the sunset over the Grand Canyon or heading to Canada for your first zip-line adventure. However, whether you are at home or on the road, there are simple steps you can take to lower your risk for breast cancer or to do what you can to stay in remission if breast cancer has already affected your life.

Both women and men can be inflicted with breast cancer; however, it is far more common in women and is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in American women (behind skin cancer). There are some risk factors that are beyond your control, such as gender, age and family history; however, there are lifestyle and dietary changes you can make to reduce your overall risk and live your healthiest life possible.

Lifestyle and Dietary Changes to Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

  1. If you smoke, consider cutting down or quitting. While most of us connect smoking with lung cancer, smoking cessation can improve your overall health and reduce your risk for a variety of illnesses.
  2. Stay active. Maintaining an active lifestyle and a healthy weight helps your immune system function properly and lowers your risk for chronic illnesses.
  3. Increase your fiber intake. High estrogen levels are related to the risk of developing breast tumors. Women who consume higher levels of fiber generally have lower estrogen levels. To increase your fiber intake, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and beans.
  4. Reduce chemicals, such as pesticides, in your life. Eat organic foods whenever possible. Switch to natural cleaning products for your home and RV. Consider using only natural, organic personal care products.
  5. Improve your diet. It is no secret that a healthy diet is a key component in reducing your risk for all sorts of illnesses and ailments. A low-fat, plant-based, high-fiber diet is generally considered the best basic eating plan for improving your overall health, enhancing immune system function and reducing your risk for chronic illnesses.
  6. Take your vitamins. It can be challenging to meet your dietary needs on a daily basis, but opting for a multivitamin designed for your gender and age group can assist you in ensuring you are getting the vitamins and minerals you need. You should also consult your healthcare provider to discuss individual supplements based on your particular health needs.
  7. Reduce stress. Stress decreases immune system function and increases your risk for becoming ill. Do what you can to remove stressors from your life, and establish healthful, stress-reducing practices, such as meditation, Tai Chi or yoga.

These seven simple tips are a great start to reducing your risk for breast cancer and improving your health while at home or on the road. Eating well and staying active is easy when enjoying the RV lifestyle, and you just might find that improving your health and longevity greatly increases your ability to enjoy your time on the road.
