Almost as soon as people began traveling in automobiles, they started towing camping trailers. And soon after that, trailer builders came up with designs that still intrigue us today.

Photographer/writer Douglas Keister has captured the sleek exteriors and clever interiors of trailers dating back to the 1930s. We see teardrops, with their small beds and exterior kitchens; canned ham trailers, which are shaped like a can of ham, and compact Airstreams, whose iconic look has endured the test of time. Keister shows many of these vintage trailers being towed by classic cars of the period. There are 200 color photographs, along with text describing the trailers and how they came to be built.

This is one of Keister’s series of books on classic recreational vehicles, following Ready to Roll, Silver Palaces and Mobile Mansions.  All of these books have been out for a while, but we call your attention to them now as excellent Christmas gifts for anyone with an interest in classic RVs.

Teardrops and Tiny Trailers is published by Gibbs, Smith Publisher in hardcover with a price of $19.95. For information, visit gibbs-smith.com.
