There are countless books about Route 66, but it is hard to imagine any that could be more comprehensive than this absorbing compilation of essays and photos covering the entire route from Grant Park in Chicago to Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.

This hardcover book fills 240 large pages with 800 vintage photographs, postcards, travel decals, maps and other memorabilia. Interspersed are essays that explore history, landmarks, diners, motels, trading posts and all things associated with Route 66 in its heyday.

Here you can meet the inventor of the gasoline pump, the man who built motels designed as wigwams, the cook who created the Chicken in the Rough dish served at Route 66 cafes, and many other fascinating characters.  Of special interest to RVers is a section on Wally Byam, the founder of Airstream.

The essays are by authors with a deep familiarity with Route 66, including Jim Hinckley, Michael Karl Witzel and Kathy Weiser. The book proceeds from Chicago westward, with stories on all the significant towns along the way. You learn what used to be seen along Route 66, as well as what is there today.

Greetings from Route 66, subtitled “The Ultimate Road Trip Back Through America’s Main Street,” is published at $30 by Voyageur Press. For information, visit voyageurpress.com.
