The rod tips were still, untouched by even the wily bait stealer. Yesterday had been pretty good, and tomorrow would prove fruitful, but this fishing trip was what my buddies like to call “paying our dues.” We would appreciate the good days after these slow times!

Hi Jessie, welcome aboard!” My buddy Phil’s perky Australian Shepherd bounded off the dock and onto the deck of my old Carver. “He’s ready to go,” Phil assured me. “I brought him cause he’s such good luck!” No argument there, the last time we took Jessie crabbing we netted easy limits. But Phil wasn’t fooling me; he loved ol’ Jessie and didn’t want to leave him home!

Light was just sneaking through the fog as I arrived at my favorite salmon stream. I had managed to get kids and dogs taken care of early enough to catch the first hour of good fishing, but I certainly wasn’t the first one on the creek!

It’s been better than fifty years now since my first efforts at fishing. In that time I’ve been fortunate enough to have plied waters and streams from Alaska to Mexico, both coasts, the Gulf, and a lot of lakes, rivers and sloughs in between. I’ve written over a thousand articles, half a dozen books, and given all kinds of talks to various groups. The only problem is, I’m no darned good at it!

Ouch! Sharp salmon teeth cut into my fingers as I tried to thread a line through the jaws of the long dead fish. He was getting his revenge after a few months plotting in the freezer; we had eaten the rest of him for dinner a dozen weeks before and were using his carcass for crab bait.
